As it is with some of the strongest One Piece Characters, Katakuri too brought something that instilled awe and glitter to the table. The ability to look a few seconds into the future is no joke. This, coupled with his physical abilities that far surpass Luffy’s, makes him stronger than most one piece characters, and as Katakuri says it during his battle, Luffy is a mere worm to him.
But as it turns out, Katakuri had a few flaws that only someone with a willpower as strong as Luffy’s could bring forth.
The gap of physical strength and mastery over their respective devil fruit abilities between Luffy and Katakuri gradually diminishes as Katakuri deals with Luffy and Luffy shows endurance unlike any other opponent Katakuri has faced before. This unseen and unheard of endurance brings out the flaws Katakuri himself never realised.
As shown in the manga and the anime, Katakuri was forced to pose as a person who lived and breathed perfection. To his many sisters and brothers, Katakuri was the embodiment of a perfect being and perhaps even a worthy successor to the legacy that Big Mom was building and would inevitably leave behind. According to him, every one but his family, (which he considers to be mostly his brothers and sisters as it is later revealed that he somewhat despised big mom because she posed a threat to his siblings), were not worth being merciful to and needed to establish a bond of fear with everyone else. Katakuri was as one could assume by now, drunk with power since no one had come close to challenging him physically or psychologically. He had made sure that his skillset was far above the rest and his bounty of over a billion, speaks volumes about his definitive kingpin like status in the pirate world.
Enter Luffy, a grounded kid from the so called “worst generation” of pirates, who ate the gum gum fruit, akin to the mochi mochi no mi that Katakuri so proudly wields. Apart from having similar physical properties, Katakuri’s fruit also has a sticky nature which proves problematic for Luffy to counter initially. Katakuri also has a Busoshuku Haki level far superior than that of Luffy and that renders Luffy’s stretchy abilities impractical for the fight.
For a moment it felt like it was one stretchy boi vs…..God?!
But Luffy, as Rayleigh points out when Luffy was under his tutelage, Luffy had the ability to work through the emotions of an individual and this gets to even the coldest heart out there in the wicked, remorseless world of the pirates.
The effect of Luffy’s hauntingly good people charming ability takes effect when Luffy breaks into Katakuri’s makeshift rest house and finds Katakuri in a compromising position where he is seen laying on his back eating donuts which his hideously large mouth open for the world to see. Katakuri in a fit of rage decides to shatter Luffy for being someone who saw a secret Katakuri had fought so hard to keep and a reputation he had struggled to maintain. But Luffy did not seem concerned with his “apparition”. Luffy was focused on the fight. So much so that even after getting hit by poison tipped darts from Katakuri’s entitled, pampered and a total wreck of a kid sister, Flambe, Luffy did not complain and honoured the battle that ensued between the clearly better version of himself.
When Katakuri eventually finds out that he had been given unwanted external assistance from sister’s wanton activities, he dealt with her and also dealt himself a serious blow with his trident to his abdomen.
Clearly Katakuri had begun to acknowledge Luffy as a worthy opponent and Luffy’s people charming effect was starting to take affect.
The fight continued with Luffy showing off his snake-man abilities and finally dealing Katakuri a final blow which Katakuri returned in the same instant as him and the two collapsed in a battle of the equally footed God’s style scenario.
Here is where Katakuri seems to have seen far into the future, so far that for the first time he did not rely on his Haki, but on his intuition and faith in the opponent he had been fighting for so long, and ironically built a bond of trust with.
Even though Katakuri had fallen face first, he gets up before Luffy, clearly showing that he had not lost the fight physically. He then falls back on his back, indicating that he had lost mentally and was emotionally drained of putting up a facade of this monster he actually was not.
All Katakuri ever wanted to do was protect his family, and now his biggest threat was a member of his family, Big Mom. Katakuri knew that Luffy would be the one to take her down someday and now he could rest in peace since he no longer needed to put up a facade of perfection. And this, was Katakuri’s greatest peek into the future.
His later conversation with Brulee, his sister, proves the same when her inquires on such and such lines since she saw the entire fight since she owns the mirror world.
